The aim of the eduroam project is to allow a user to access the Internet through the wireless network (rarely through the wired network) from any educational institution involved in the project. This solution is primarily directed to the staff and students of universities and research units. In order to use the network each user obtains authentication settings from their home institution. The eduroam network authentication is based on 802.1x (network login). User membership in a given group is verified to ensure that users have appropriate access rights. The transmission during the authentication process is encrypted and can be based on different methods depending on the institution's adopted policy.
